Acclimating Fish

Acclimating Your New Fish

Keep fish in a cool place on the trip home.

Care must be taken when adding fish to tank or pond. NEVER, NEVER float bags of fish in sunlight. This heats the water up and rapidly reduces the amount of oxygen available to the fish.

Float fish in the bags in the receiving tank or pond for 1/2 hour.

Add to the bag 50% of the total volume of the water in the bag, with the water the fish will be placed in. Note their activities.

Allow 15 minutes for the fish to acclimate and then release. Do not place the water in the bag in your tank or pond.

If the fish act erratic test your water for any problems prior to release and adjust accordingly.

The water quality should be:

  • Salt level 5 ppt (5 lbs non iodized salt per 100 gallons)
  • Temperature 70-85 degrees (colder water-see koivet.com's health page)
  • pH 6.5-8
  • Ammonia 0 PPM
  • Nitrite less than .25 PPM
  • Oxygen 4 PPM or greater
  • Salt level 5 ppt (5 lbs non iodized salt per 100 gallons)-yes we repeated this one twice!
